Taking Proper Care of Yorkie Puppies

Therefore you need to be honest with yourself. Do you understand all that is required to care for them? Are you up to the task of doing it? Will you remain committed to your Yorkie long after the newness of it has worn off?

Finding a good veterinarian to assist you with caring for your puppies is important. You should be able to consider them a partner in your efforts to keep your new pup happy and healthy.

They can assist you with deciding on the right foods for it, evaluating medical concerns, and making sure routine things including shots are taken care of as they should be.

Yorkie puppies are extremely active so you need to be ready for their level of energy. They can get into things around your home too so take a look and see what may be of interest to them.

Remove those things that can be dangerous or that you worry they may be able to ruin. Puppies often chew on things as their teeth are developing so don’t leave shoes or other items they can chew up in their path.

You will want to tape their ears in order to get them to stand up like the breed characteristics show. Too many owners assume this is going to happen naturally but it doesn’t.

The process of taping their ears up so they remain in a position that won’t hurt them. You do need to watch for signs of infection though just in case, as it has been known to occur in or around the ears.

You will also have to decide if you are going to let the puppies breed or not. If you choose not to, then talk to your vet about the right time to get them spayed or neutered.

If you are going to let them breed you need to realize that the females can start going into heat at about one year of age. Don’t let her breed more than twice a year to keep health risks at a minimum.

Potty training is going to be quite an event. You will need to make sure you are ready for it. Yorkshire terriers are said to be among the most difficult dogs for this process.

Keep that in mind so you don’t lose your patience with the Yorkie. Crate training is going to help you get past this important issue though. You will need to be patient and consistent if you want to see positive results.

Grooming is also a concern and something this breed of puppies need to be exposed to very early. A Yorkshire terrier trim can be done at home by you or you can make an appointment with a professional groomer. There are many different styles you can choose from for Yorkie puppies.
