If you are interested in breeding Yorkies, there are many things you need to realize about this breed. It should be much more than just a way for you to make some money from selling the puppies.
You need to be very passionate about this breed of dog. They are known to have some genetic medical concerns, so as a breeder you should be diligent about preventing as many of them as possible.
This means investing in the proper testing to see what could be the genetic issues when a particular male and female breed.
Being able to remove those Yorkies with common medical problems in their genetic markers from your breeding program, means there is a lesser chance of such problems continuing down to future generations. That means as a breed they will be healthier than before.
Many experts state the Yorkie breeding age should be about two years for both the males and the females. This way they are fully mature and it also gives time for genetic problems to be known.
If you breed them younger than that, then some of the problems may not have had time to emerge.
Female Yorkies can also experience problems with the natural delivery of their pups due to their small size. Therefore it is recommended that you only breed them twice per year.
If they don’t seem to be recovering very well from the deliveries you may want to cut them back to one litter per year. With the males you should be able to breed them up to four times per year.
